ICAADE 2017 - The second International Conference on Amphibious Architecture, Design and Engineering

The second International Conference on Amphibious Architecture, Design and Engineering will be held at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada from June 25 to 28, 2017.

ICAADE 2017 will unite academics, practitioners, professionals and policymakers in the exchange of knowledge on amphibious flood mitigation strategies by inviting collaboration among research institutions, businesses, and governments around the world. Flood mitigation and climate change adaptation requires the development of new housing types and retrofit strategies to preserve our built and natural environment, and maintain community integrity in populated regions where flooding is expected to increase.

ICAADE 2017 will create a transdisciplinary environment by drawing representatives from a broad range of disciplines such as water management, urban and landscape design, architecture, hydrology, engineering, the social sciences and humanities, building construction and codification, education and health, and experts from fields such as commerce, policy, information systems, knowledge management and insurance.

Mr. Luu Duc Cuong, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arch. - Acting General Director  of Viet Nam Institute for Urban and Rural Planning (VIUP) at the workshop

Mr. Luu Duc Cuong, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arch. - Acting General Director of Viet Nam Institute for Urban and Rural Planning (VIUP) had presented the paper with title “Green housing design adapting to climate change for low-income communities” at the conference.

On the paper, Mr. Luu Duc Cuong has concentrated on following issues:

Green architecture – An inevitable trend: Due to urbanization and climate change cause enormous pressure on the ecosystems and the environment. So, the green architecture/green building as the most important, active and effective contribution of the construction sector to respond to climate change and to ensure the sustainable development of the Earth.

Vietnamese traditional architecture  – Valuable experience: Vietnamese traditional architecture  is valuable experience of the tropical architecture. The nature of "green architecture is the architecture for the environment":  environmentally friendly architecture, minimizing the impact on the environment, energy efficiency, environment/climate is the focus for design principles. Using building materials and applying traditional architecture have been appropriated such as: selecting the facing direction of the house, arranging lay-out and space, digging ponds, planting trees, etc ... so that the house is suitable with natural, psychological and economic conditions of the Vietnamese people.

Apply traditional architecture in building green houses for low income communities adapting to climate change

The meaning of this paper shows one of the human issues should be paid attention in building green houses is to create communication space for the residents. It is not green space but also creation of communication environment in green space, adapting communication requires in the new society environment, but high evaluation of traditional values creating the social sustainability. That means the green architecture appeared in the houses for the low-income residents.
